THE original and only edition was published in 1891, written and compiled by father and son, George and Ralph Dixon, first and second Ayton School Superintendents, drawing on records and their personal diaries of events, both major and minor. There are now very few original copies in circulation and, therefore, many Ayton old scholars, and historians generally, were hitherto denied the opportunity to read this most informative book.

This Ayton Jubilee book was written using spelling, terminology and grammar familiar to all in the mid to late 19th Century but often strange in modern times. Therefore, original spelling has been maintained and as few corrections as possible made to the original format and then only so as not to confuse website software.

As the production of this Internet edition has only been made possible by scanning all the pages and conversion to a text file via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, it is almost certain that scanning mistakes were made and not picked up yet in proof reading. If you find such an error - which will be obvious - please e-mail and let us know which page(s) and where on the page, and corrections will be made.

Book pages in website format are usually formatted to avoid too long a page, involving excessive scrolling to reach the foot. In this edition, when the screen depth is set to 600 pixels and width 800 pixels, the number of “screens” to scroll averages three to four.

Enjoy this informative and enjoyable book, not hitherto widely available since 1891 - a window to education 100 to 150 years ago, where standards and syllabus might well put many a modern school to shame.
